The chain opened the Great Escape Lodge in 2006, an indoor waterpark and hotel that operates year-round. Expansion continued through the 90s, with a water park, the park's tallest coaster Boomerang (now named Flashback), and more major attractions, many of which relocated from other Six Flags properties. To this day, Great Escape has retained its pre-Six Flags name, and is not branded like a traditional Six Flags Park. Premier Parks, which later purchased Six Flags, acquired the park in 1996. Comet remains to be sort of a "hidden gem" at the park, still holding its own in rankings against modern wooden roller coasters. The year of 1994 brought the addition of the park's star attraction, Comet, a historic wooden coaster that operated at Crystal Beach Park in Canada. To supplement the name change, several rides and attractions were purchased, including the park's first major steel coaster, Steamin' Demon, relocated from Pontchartrain Beach. With a vision to transform the park further as a large regional theme park, the park's name changed to The Great Escape in 1983. Wanting to expand the park and target older visitors, areas such as Ghostown (a western area), and Jungleland USA were added. Named Storytown USA, the park carried a fairytale theme, with small rides and attractions for children. The Great Escape opened in 1954, built by Charlie Wood who was inspired to build an amusement park after visiting Knott's Berry Farm.
